This is a question I Googled many times before I started as a Virtual Assistant and no one could provide a definitive answer? So as a Virtual Assistant mentor I made it my mission to answer it.

I mean, come on, how do you expect someone to take the scary leap to invest their time and money into becoming a Virtual Assistant if you’re not prepared to tell them when they can expect their first client/s?

Seven years later I can answer that question, but a lot depends on YOU.

• How hard are you prepared to work?

Initially you’re going to need to spend every spare moment getting things in place ready for your launch, then you’re going to need to spend every spare moment marketing yourself to potential clients. It will feel overwhelming for a while but if you really want this, you’ll do it.

• How much do you want this VA business to work?

Is it just the money that’s enticing you? Do you think it’s an easy way to make a thousands of £££s without doing very much for it? Many do because of some rogue coaches out there. I’m afraid this isn’t an easy way to make money while sat on your sofa watching daytime TV. You’ve got to want this lifestyle for all the reasons it gives you.

• Are you doing it for you, or for some other reason?

You need to want to do this otherwise it will just become a chore and feel like a boring employed role. If you’re ‘meh’ about it, get off the train now, this ain’t for you. We only want people in the VA world who will fly our flag and talk about it with pride.

• Are you prepared to sacrifice a few things to get to that ideal work / life balance.

Trust me, you won’t be able to skip off with the kids to a theme park every teacher training day at the start of your VA journey. You need to ensure your business is making money before you start enjoying all the benefits this lifestyle can give you. For the first couple of years you’ll be working your little peach off.

• Do you think being a VA is easy because ‘it’s only admin’?

Where’s that Family Fortunes buzzer button when you need it? If anyone ever says it’s ‘basic admin’, ‘only admin’ or ‘just admin’ then they’re in for a massive shock. You’re looking after aspects of another persons business, their whole life likely depends on the profit from that business. What you do is important and it’s just as important you see it as such.
