‘I really didn’t want to use the words ‘no-nonsense’ in this review of Catherine Gladwyn’s second book, the follow-up to her hugely successful and award-winning ‘How to be a VA’. However, there really is no other way to describe the advice she imparts in this fantastic business book. Catherine’s no-nonsense attitude towards running a business is so refreshing in the somewhat over-populated world of small business reading.
I have read a LOT of business books since looking to start my own business almost three years ago. Many have contained useful advice, interesting points of view and thought-provoking commentary that has made me question and evaluate my own business practice. Many have not. The 20% Rule® is, I think, the first book of this kind that I KNOW I will use as a bible for my business, despite it being fairly established and successful already. It’s all well and good having miraculous mornings, but you won’t reach your full potential without the actionable, no-nonsense (there, I’ve said it again) advice that Catherine gives here.
If you’re new in business, or are looking to start up in the wake of Covid-19, this book is an absolute must to add to your collection. In fact, don’t bother with a collection; you won’t need anything else once you’ve read this and actioned Catherine’s advice. As well as explaining The 20% Rule® and how it will preserve your business, she goes into great detail about many other aspects of starting and running a sustainable business, including the foundations you need to put in place, pricing, marketing and many of the myths that she believes hinder business owners from becoming truly successful.
Full of practical advice, anecdotal evidence and cheesy one-liners, Catherine’s book is so far from the dry ‘how to….’ business books that end up half-read and gathering dust on the shelf. Reading it feels like having a chat with a mate who really knows her shizzle when it comes to running a business and you just know that if you follow the well thought-out action points throughout the book, you’ll make her proud and she’ll always be there cheering you on.
Whether you’re thinking of starting a business, already up and running, or well into your self-employed journey, you need this book. The 20% Rule® makes so much sense and I’d call Catherine Gladwyn a genius, but we don’t want her head to explode (read the book to find out why!).’
